#AroostookThing of the
week: The
Mars Hill Mountain Challenge in Mars Hill.
When is a hill a mountain?
When
you’re in Mars Hill, Maine.
Mars
Hill Mountain dominates the central Aroostook landscape, a familiar sight for
travelers on U.S. Routes 1 and 1A that is visible from communities 30-40 miles
away.
This
hill that is really a mountain is the home of Bigrock Mountain Ski Area, which
boasts the highest vertical of any ski area in northern Maine or the Canadian
Maritimes. Bigrock is a not-for-profit organization that sustains itself through
a hearty helping of generous community support as well as traditional skiing
related revenue streams in the winter and special one-of-a-kind events in the
summer and fall.
One
of those events, The Mars Hill Mountain
Challenge, is coming up this weekend and it is not too late to sign up to
run or volunteer! Registration and more info can be found at www.marshillmountainchallenge.com.
The
Mars Hill Mountain Challenge features a 5k course with plenty of elevation gain
and natural and man-made obstacles along the way.
Folks
may register as an individual then create a 4-person team, if interested. The
race is open to ages 13 and up, but is recommended for ages 18 and up.
Pre-registration is required and may be done online at the website listed above
or at the Bigrock Base Lodge the morning of the event.
The
cost to participate is $75/person, which includes a t-shirt and a lift ticket
for upcoming season. All proceeds benefit Bigrock’s community ski programs.
To
find out more, visit www.marshillmountainchallenge.com.
#AroostookNote:
Did you know that the summit of Mars Hill Mountain is the first place in the
United States to see the sun rise late March to mid-September?
