Hundreds of kids, maybe even thousands, have learned to ski on the gentle slopes of Quoggy Jo Ski Center. Quoggy Jo is a place that is near and dear to my heart. As a college student, I was fortunate to be brought into the QJ family by a dear friend, working nights and weekends in my first-ever job in the ski industry. Quoggy has always done what it can to get kids outside in the winter time, thanks to a few caring “big kids” (otherwise known as parents) that would volunteer their time to groom the trails, run the lift, and teach the lessons. This weekend, the good folks of QJ are once again pulling out all the stops to ge...

Plus lots more! #offugo… #AroostookThing of the week: Fort Kent Outdoor Center’s Frostbite XC Ski Event in Fort Kent. Cross Country ski trails and events are abundant in Aroostook! This week’s “AroostookThing” may be dubbed the Frostbite Race, but for those who show up to strap on their skinny skis and race or tour the course, I don’t think frostbite will be too much of a concern. Typically, mid-January is the heart of winter in these parts, considering our cold season lasts from November to May. Climatologically speaking, January is our coldest month and calls for an extra layer or two of clothing for outdoor enthusiasts. The below-zero temps of the last couple of weeks certainly bear that out. How...

Most people would never know it, but birding is HUGE in Aroostook County! Birding, the art of observing birds in their natural habitats, is a popular hobby around the world. Aroostook County, with its abundance of forest, grassland, and wetland resources, provides ideal bird habitat and is a haven for birds and birders alike. Of course, birding can take place in all seasons, but in the winter months, even the hardiest of birds hunker down, away from the cold climate. Thus, so too do even the hardiest of birders – which is why this week’s featured event...

The Aroostook Cup Race Series, comprised of six races at venues throughout the Crown of Maine from January through March, kicks of this weekend with the Deprey Classic Ski Race, hosted by Four Seasons Trail Association in Madawaska. Though self-billed as a race series, the Aroostook Cup really is much more than that. It is a celebration of the winter season, of getting outside and being active, and of sharing it all with friends old and new. To put everything in a nutshell: you don’t have to be a ski racer to be a part of the fun. M...
