Aroostook Outdoor News: 7.28.16 edition

We’ve cooked up a new calendar feature: #AroostookThing of the week. 1 event, 1 minute to read, 1 more reason to share w/family and friends!

In this edition: 1) A celebration of #trails and #outdoorlifestyle in #PresqueIsle. 2) A #5k #walk and a #canoe and #kayak race in #IslandFalls. 3) A 5k #RoadRace in #FortKent. Plus lots more! #offugo...

#AroostookThing of the week: The Woodie Wheaton Land Trust Mickey Finn Children’s Wildlife Festival in Houlton.

Not long after offugo went into print in our local newspapers, a friend and reader pointed me in the direction of the Woodie Wheaton Land Trust in Forest City, and I am so glad he did. Since that time, I have imagined myself and my family attending one of the many enticing events that WWLT hosts each summer. Alas, we just have not been able to fit anything into our busy schedules.

You see, WWLT organizes canoe trips, history walks, educational seminars, and more. The events are designed to help the group protect and celebrate the natural beauty and remaining wildness of the Chiputneticook Lakes region in Southern Aroostook County and Western New Brunswick.

If you’ve ever been to the area, you know that it could easily be considered one of the best kept secrets in the Crown of Maine.

Well, this Saturday, the group is bringing that secret to the Shiretown by staging their annual Mickey Finn Day. From 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. (rain or shine) on July 30, Houlton’s Riverside Park will come alive with learning and fun for youngsters aged 3-15 and their families.

As part of WWLT’s Outdoor Heritage and Conservation Education Program, children will learn new outdoor skills at interactive stations and may win some great prizes by participating in outdoor-themed activities.

If you want to learn more about this event or about the Woodie Wheaton Land Trust, visit www.woodiewheaton.org or call 207-448-3250.

Or, if you’re like me, just show up to the event and see for yourself what it’s all about. Now, about that schedule...
